“I made promises, and promises are meant to be kept.”
I was married to my darling Giuseppina, or Gio as she liked to be called, for 42 years.
On the morning of our 42nd wedding anniversary she unexpectedly succumbed to a pulmonary embolism whilst we were on holiday in France, writing our first novel. It was to her that I made 2 promises and it is about time I lived up to them.
In 2021 my daughter Vicky and I hiked the final 100km of the Via Francigena, the pilgrim’s route to the Vatican, to raise funds for Thrombosis UK in memory of Gio.
This was despite spraining my ankle on the 1st day of our hike. So this proves I can succeed when I put my mind to it
I have always loved reading because I was encouraged by my mother who, hard of hearing and preferring a good book to the TV or radio, would take us to the library every fortnight.
My journey as an author began by writing short plays for an amateur dramatic group.
I am a member of a writer’s group hosted by a renowned author of detective fiction.
Gio was born in Agrigento, Sicily and came to England when she was just 6 years old with her mother, father and sister Maria.
Not knowing any English when she arrived she quickly learned the language and in high-school developed a love for classic English literature.
We met as teenagers when were at a hospital radio station where we were teamed up together, presenting a show called “Two’s Company,”
To find out more about deep vein thrombosis and how a pulmonary embolism tragically affected Gio, my good friends Ilene & Gary Modica, who live in Lucca, kindly wrote an articale about her on their award winning blog “Our Italian Journey”, read here.
